Aico Tsumori (b. 1979, Shiga, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese ceramic artist renowned for her colorful, playful, and imaginative ceramic sculptures. She specializes in handmade figures and animal forms, integrating traditional Japanese elements, combining technical skill with a distinctive aesthetic.
Tsumori graduated in 2002 from Kyoto City University of Arts, majoring in ceramic art. She continued to develop her practice, winning the Newcomer Award at the 2003 Women’s Ceramic Art Competition. She has also received recognition at multiple biennales, including second prizes at the Kikuchi Biennale in 2015 and 2017, and the Shiga Prefecture Art Award in 2018.
Her work is inspired by personal childhood memories and life experiences. Childhood fears of dolls in the corners of rooms informed her early creations. After becoming a mother, she began transforming her daughter's drawings into three-dimensional ceramic sculptures, creating a tangible record of familial memory through their artistic collaboration. Her works are characterized by vibrant colors, simple forms, and a sense of innocence and joy, attracting international gallery attention. Renowned artist Yoshitomo Nara is among her collectors.
Aico Tsumori lives and works in Shigaraki, Shiga, Japan. Her works have been exhibited in Japan, the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
