Chen Da-Yu, also known as Chen Han-Qing, hailed from Chaoyang of China’s Guangdong Province. He was known for his freehand floral and bird paintings, calligraphy, and seal engraving. In his early years, he studied with Wu Changshuo in freehand floral and bird painting, and later came under the tutelage of Qi Baishi. Additionally, his paintings have been influenced by masters of the Ming and Qing Dynasties such as Xu Wei, Shi Tao, Bada Shanren, and the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. With Chen’s combination of many masters’ art styles, his art gained a very unique flair — especially noticeable are the powerful, smooth strokes that can be seen on all of his works.
