+ OVERVIEW

Coming from a background of traditional wood carving, wood sculpting is naturally an area that Ju Ming is most skilled in. Later, he came under the tutelage of Yuyu Yang and accepted the baptism of modern art, gradually enriching his personal vocabulary of art. Ju Ming gained recognition worldwide by the Taichi series. It was a harmonious beauty that he achieved by putting oriental strength and beauty together. Ju Ming's "Nativist" series made him a representative figure among trends of Taiwanese Nativist movements during the 1970s. During this period of time, agricultural themes of cows, chickens or even historical figures were the main focus. Through these works, the artist was able to portray the natural feelings that he has for his native land, easily striking similar resonance. Ju received a number of accolades including one of ten prestigious Outstanding Young Persons from Taiwan awards and an Arts Award from the Chinese Cultural and Arts Association. The Juming Museum, where much of his work is housed, was established in Chin-shan, Taipei County in 1999.

Ju Ming became a household name after his personal exhibition at the National Museum of History in 1976. During the exhibition, Taiwanese society was faced with a series of political-economic challenges. The society at the time was engaged in the search for a unique Taiwanese identity as part of the push towards self-affirmation and a vision for the future. As a result, the Vernacular Movement emerged from the art & cultural community. Due to this backdrop, Ju Ming's "Nativist" series resonated with the public’s consciousness. The Taiwanese identity, shape and theme radiated by the farmer and water buffalo acquired the contemporary interpretation of unity in adversity and expressed a strong sense of vitality. From then on, Ju Ming retained the marks of his carving knife. The lines of emotion and action employed a rich textural lexicon to create an artistic symbol filled with life and energy. Ju Ming was born on January 20th, 1938, and belongs to the Chinese zodiac sign of the ox. His "Water Buffalo" portraits embody his nostalgia for his hometown and also signify his lifelong dedication to hard work in creative pursuits until the end of his life.
