+ OVERVIEW

“When people see my paintings and novels, they often think about the agony in life. There are many ways to interpret the pain in life, but I use painting and written language to express it………
I like to apply the imagery in life to depict realism, to sorrowfully convey the feelings of facing getting old, sick and finally passing away, describing normal people who have been suffering from the surrounding, involving a swirling vortex of tragic is often the epitome of the characters in my works, deliberately using apathy to highlight the absurdity of life, such as wanderers and vagabonds
etc. Painting is a tool for self-expression, expressing the complex consciousness of my inner depression and the solitary relationship between me and others. “ - CHIU Ya-tsai

The creation of Chiu Ya-tsai is centered on figures, and his portraits have a temperament that is difficult to distinguish between Chinese and Western. The bold, powerful and strong colors employed in the background have the color concept of Fauvism. With the traditional Chinese outline drawing, the straightforward, simple lines sketch the contours of delicate facial features, not rigidly adhere to forms
and details, but vividly depict the look of each character. His creation came from the thorough observation of mankind in a long period of time. The "Female Portrait" was completed in 1998 and sure reached his mature phase. By that time, Chiu Yatsai had been creating oil paintings for more than 20 years. He not only successfully mastered the nature in his characters, but also reached perfection in the familiarity and skills when deploying the medium. He no longer just directly laid out the joys and sorrows of his characters, but demonstrated a much deeper level and in a restrained strength. The painting shows a woman resting on the sofa, with her ture emotion not only shoe by her facial expression. She aeems to be i deep thought while personifying culture and refinement. Her hand movements and body language exude a sense of relaxation, it seems to interpret the lonely nature of life, in a silent space where no one is around. From the body language of the character, the attentive depiction on the costumes to the setting of furniture in the background space, the artist’s diligent intention is clearly visible. This arrangement is scarcely seen in the portrait paintings of Chiu Ya-tsai, and hence make it even more rare.
