+ OVERVIEW
With a background of Western art, Tong Yang-tze transformed and revived Chinese calligraphy to heighten its aesthetic quality based on abstract art from the West. Her works capture the essence of both Western and Eastern art and design aesthetics, enhancing the uniqueness of her art. This work, created in 2005, is from a series of works on which Tong wrote “blessing” a hundred times by the end of each year since 1998. Each character was written in different styles chosen by the artist to bring classical art to the modern lifestyle. Each word has its own character of formality, elusiveness, sturdiness and fluidity presented by the calligrapher in different scripts on folded panels, imitating the form of an ancient book. Gold-coated paper was used to highlight the luxurious elegance of this rare and poetic calligraphy masterpiece.
