Born in 1958 in Pennsylvania, Keith Haring developed a passion in drawing at a very early age and started learning cartooning skills from his father. At the age of 18, he attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh and hold a solo exhibition at Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center at the age of 19. In 1978, Haring left for New York where he studied at the School of Visual Arts (SVA). In 1981, he held his first solo exhibition in New York at the Westbeth Painters Space. After that, he achieved international recognition by participating in renowned exhibitions worldwide including Documenta 7 in Kassel; the São Paulo Biennial; and the Whitney Biennial. Haring produced hundreds of public drawings, worked on poster designing and performance arts. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop in Soho, New York, selling products that bears his images. Keith Haring’s work is highly marked by Pop art. Through a simple and straightforward artistic statement, as well as cartoonish imagery, the artist conveys his concern with humanity and arouses people’s attention to social issues.
